A scissor lift is an elevated work platform, sometimes called a bucket truck, mobile hydraulic lifting machine, raising work station, or aerial work platform, which elevates the work place from ground level to an elevated position usually at some predetermined height above the ground. Scissor lifts are used to carry out many different types of jobs. They can be used for installing roofs, cleaning guttering, painting ceilings and walls, installing lighting and ventilation systems, roof restoration, etc. Scissor lifts can also be used for moving personnel or cargo from one floor to another. The mechanism of a scissor lift is simple. It consists of a platform that can be raised to a particular height by a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder provides the power required to lift the platform to the required height, by using pulleys, counterweights or chain and gear mechanism. This feature helps to manage the weight of the worker, who remains at ground level during work on the scissor lift. The advantage of this system is that it can be tailor-made to fit the terrain, and work location. The machine can be further modified if required, to meet the changing height requirements at various locations.
Scissor lifts are normally available with fixed or non-fixed platforms. With fixed lifts, the height of the platform cannot be changed unless and until the manufacturer’s specification changes. The scissor lift with non-fixed platform is flexible and designed to lift and place the platforms at various heights according to specific needs. The lift can be set to lift up to three stories, or can be designed to lift and place the platforms at various degrees, based on the terrain. In case of various degrees of platforms, the system has a provision for ‘low-sloping’ and ‘high-sloping’ sections. When a scissor lift with non-fixed platform is fitted, the height of the platform can be changed as per the concrete slopes at selected sites.
