In order to become a microbiologist, a person needs to complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, which may be done through a community college or an online university. After this, one needs to gain some additional knowledge by participating in a number of specializations including allergy and asthma, public health and medicine, virology and bacteriology, pharmacology and genetics. Some microbiologists specialize in specific areas of the science such as virus, bacteria and inflammation. There are also independent research centers that a person can join to further their knowledge on the field of microbiology.
To complete a PhD in microbiology, a person must complete an extended post-graduate training programme. The length of this programme varies according to the student’s choice and the availability of academic funds. Most microbiology based PhD courses take two years from the date of graduation, although a few can be completed in less than a year.
